Finland: Postdoc positions at Department of Biomedical Engineering and Computational Science

At BECS, we focus on living and other complex systems, their measurement, analysis, modelling, understanding and control. Systems of interest range from small to large: from quantum dots, molecular interactions and nanosystems to neurons, the brain and the heart to cognition,

social and economical networks to information technology systems. We combine experimental and computational methods and develop algorithms and new technologies to attack major problems in human well-being, medical diagnostics, society, energy, and environment.

We seek postdoctoral scientists for the period Aug. 1, 2010 to Dec. 31, 2012; shorter time periods within this frame are possible as well.

1. Modeling the human brain

The candidate should have a strong background in computational techniques and good grasp for neuroscience methods such as MRI, TMS or MEG/EEG. Interest in system-level understanding of brains and a good grasp of biophysics is beneficial as well.

For more information about this position, contact prof. Risto Ilmoniemi, email address: risto.ilmoniemi (at) tkk.fi

2. Computational sociology: from mind to social interaction

The candidate should have good background either in quantitative cognitive science or complex social networks as well as some grasp for sociology or social psychology, system level computational analysis and modeling, or naturalistic experimental techniques in neuroscience.

For more information about this position, contact prof. Kimmo Kaski, email address: kimmo.kaski (at) hut.fi

3. Connecting to the brain

The candidate should have a strong background in cellular- and molecular-level experimental science and interest in biological applications of nanotechnology and vision science.

For more information about this position, contact prof. Ari Koskelainen, email address: ari.koskelainen (at) tkk.fi

4. Bayesian and computational complex system theory

The candidate should have a strong background in computational analysis and modeling science and techniques and good grasp for probability theory, statistics or statistical physics. The application areas could include

  • computational health
  • epidemiological analyses
  • understanding large data sets and complex systems
