PhD Studentship in Network Coding Lite

Applications are invited for a PhD Studentship to undertake research in the area of Network Coding starting September 2011.

The studentship is partly based in the school of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science and partly based in department of Mathematics, at Queen Mary University of London. The project will be jointly supervised by Dr. Soren Riis (supervisor) (http://www.eecs.qmul.ac.uk/~smriis) and Peter Keevash (co-supervisor) ( http://www.maths.qmul.ac.uk/~keevash/).

Network Coding is a new type of routing protocol that originally was suggested for satellite communication, but where Microsoft later used the ideas in the file distribution system Avalanche. The project will investigate routing protocols that combine standard protocols with “lite” versions of Network Coding. The PhD project will investigate links between Network Coding and information bottlenecks in communication networks. The topic is somewhat interdisciplinary on the interface between Computer Science (complexity theory, communication networks), Electronic Engineering (multiuser information theory) and mathematics (Combinatorics and Graph Theory).

The successful candidate should have a first or upper second honours degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Electronic Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or a related field, and be able to demonstrate strong mathematical and analytical skills. Good programming skills are also required.

The studentship funded by EECS Studentships will cover student fees and a tax-free stipend starting at 15,590 per annum and is available to candidates of all nationalities.

Informal enquiries can be made by email to Dr Soren Riis soren.riis [at] eecs.qmul.ac [.] uk or Dr. Peter Keevash http://www.qmul.ac.uk/postgraduate/apply/

To apply please email the following documents to Dr Soren Riis (soren.riis [at] eecs.qmul.ac [.] uk) :a completed application form, a CV listing all publications, your representative publications in PDF format, 3 reference letters, a research statement and other relevant documents as requested (see www.qmul.ac.uk/postgraduate/apply/). These documents must also be submitted online following the instructions given in the link.

The closing date for the applications is 31st January 2012.

Interviews are expected to take place shortly after the 6th February 2012.
